As the chill of the Australian Winter starts to nip at your toes and herald the return of the nation’s best-loved festival, Splendour In The Grass, Floridian band Surfer Blood bring their catchy, summery indie songs Down Under.
Surfer Blood rose through the blogosphere and surfaced on top as tastemaker media Pitchfork branded them “irresistibly catchy” and “a bit Weezer-esque in a very good way”. They laid down their demos for their debut “Astro Coast”, then took the songs on the road, touring the US several times.
It was after they played more than a dozen times in four days at New York’s CMJ Music Marathon, that the world caught onto the genre-hopping meldings of Surfer Blood – from thumping, anthemic indie surf-pop to 90s indie stylings – and they were hooked.
Their SXSW performances had the NME calling them “an excellent band that are putting a sun-bleached dystopian spin on the classic surf-pop sound” but it’s the band’s secret weapon “an excitable dude with crazy hair and an arsenal of cowbells at his disposal” (Pitchfork) that captures audience attention live.
“With shamelessly addicting hooks and shimmering guitars, the band’s well-received performance set them in the top tier of artists to watch in 2010.” Sound Check Magazine, SXSW Review
triple j dubbed their debut Album of The Week, as Rolling Stone, JMag, The Sydney Morning Herald and a slew of blogs joined the tide of praise.
“’Astro Coast’ is the luscious debut from Surfer Blood. Overflowing with sunbathed, anthemic and reverb soaked indie gems; this album's so much fun we want to pack up our longboards and live inside it.” triple j
“After riding high on several months of bloghype, this Floridian four-piece make their anticipated debut with Astro Coast… Surfer Blood have provided us with an instant soundtrack to 2010.” The Dwarf
Surfer Blood take a ‘Swim’ in Australia in late July performing at Splendour In The Grass as well as headlining shows in Melbourne and Sydney.
